01

Life before

Tamir was 18, the eldest of Herut and Alon Nimrodi’s three children. His mother described school as difficult socially and academically, with ADHD and sensory issues shaping his years as a student. In the army’s Education Corps he found a role that suited him: he received an award for excellent service and was being considered for officer training. His mother remembered his humor, horse riding and love of geology and astronomy. She said his confidence had grown as he found his place in service.

October 7

Tamir served as an Education Corps soldier at the COGAT base beside Erez. On October 7, 2023, he was abducted from the base with soldiers Ron Sherman and Nik Beizer. His mother’s account and later reporting identify the three together in footage as they were taken toward Gaza. The family’s public statement said Tamir was alive when abducted. His mother’s last direct contact came that morning; after it, the family had no confirmed sign of life. He was the eldest sibling, and his sisters were still young as the family entered the long uncertainty of captivity.

03

Captivity

For two years the family had no confirmed sign of life or reliable information about Tamir’s condition. In an AP interview published March 18, 2025, his mother Herut described the strain of waiting and her determination to keep fighting for him while caring for his younger sisters. She held onto his humor, curiosity and the confidence he had begun to find in his army role. On October 15, 2025, the IDF informed the family that he had been abducted alive from the base and assessed that he was killed in captivity during the early stages of the war. The same announcement named him as 18 and noted he left his parents and two sisters. The Associated Press reported that the military assessed he was likely killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting senior Hamas officers two days after the abduction.

Return

Hamas handed Tamir’s body over from Gaza on October 14, 2025, under a ceasefire agreement. After identification at Israel’s forensic medicine institute, the IDF notified his family on October 15 that he had been returned for burial. At the funeral, his father Alon called him an extraordinary and moral young man; his mother said goodbye to her firstborn son. Tamir was buried in Kfar Saba.

Family and remembrance

Herut and Alon spoke publicly for years while seeking information and Tamir’s return. In one interview his mother described how she tried to preserve laughter and ordinary family life for his younger sisters, even as she waited for news. At the funeral, Alon remembered Tamir as an “amazing, moral, extraordinary young man.” His mother spoke of saying goodbye to her firstborn. Family testimony places those words beside a boy who rode horses, studied stars and rocks, and found new confidence in service. The sisters lost their older brother while still growing up; his parents’ accounts keep his place in their family visible.
