01
Life before October 7
Tal Chaimi was born and raised in Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, where his family had lived for three generations. He attended local schools, then spent a year in national service with Hashomer Hatzair before enlisting in the Paratroopers Brigade. After military service he returned to the kibbutz, worked on its dairy farm and studied mechanical engineering at Ben-Gurion University. He later worked for a decade as an engineer at a factory in Kibbutz Revivim. Tal and Ela had been together since high school and were raising three children in Nir Yitzhak; they learned they were expecting a fourth child three weeks before the attack. Tal’s mother Esti had died of cancer in July 2023; he was survived by his father Zohar and sister Or.
02
Abduction
At the start of the attack on 7 October 2023, Tal told Ela and their three children to remain in the reinforced room while he went out to defend the kibbutz as commander of its local security team. Ela later told the Associated Press that she watched him leave. A call that day showed his phone in Khan Younis; she told the children this meant he had been taken nearby and might return. His body had been taken to Gaza after he was killed defending Nir Yitzhak.
03
Captivity
Tal was killed on 7 October while defending the kibbutz; his body, rather than a living captive, was taken to Gaza. His family was told in December 2023 that he had been killed and that his body was being held there. Ela held a funeral and observed shiva in 2023, though the temporary grave contained only his helmet. Their fourth child, Lotan, was born in May 2024, seven months after Tal’s death.
04
Return
Tal’s body was returned to Israel on 20 October 2025. The IDF said he was identified after forensic examination and recognized posthumously as a fallen reserve soldier. Ela said the return brought her and the children great relief after years without his body.
05
Aftermath
Tal was buried in Nir Yitzhak on 22 October 2025, two years after the family’s first symbolic funeral. Ela spoke to each of their four children at his funeral and played an audio recording of Lotan calling his father. She described telling Tal about the children’s lives and the years that had passed. The family’s first grave had held his helmet; the later burial let them lay him to rest in the kibbutz he defended.
