01

Life before

Nik grew up in Beersheba, attending elementary school in Nahal Ashan and later Reger High School. He then studied machining at a vocational school near the Nuclear Research Center. His mother Katya remembered a curious child who wanted to try things for himself. He drew, practiced taekwondo and breakdance, played tennis and swam. He liked animals, cars and going out to drift with friends in the desert. At home, he cooked with his mother, sang karaoke and helped around the house. His sister remembered an older brother who was close to her; family accounts show his energy in both noisy gatherings and ordinary shared chores.

October 7

Nik enlisted on April 30, 2023. He became a driver at the Erez Coordination and Liaison Administration base. On October 7 he was at the base after agreeing to cover a friend’s weekend shift. His mother called at 6:30 a.m., after hearing the alerts; he told her the soldiers had gone into a shelter as rockets struck nearby. When reports of an incursion emerged, his family sent unanswered messages. His sister then reached him by phone; he tried to reassure them before the connection ended. His family later saw footage of Nik being led toward Gaza with fellow soldiers Ron Sherman and Tamir Nimrodi. The footage showed him alive at the moment of capture.

03

Captivity

His family identified him in footage showing the three soldiers being taken toward Gaza alive. On September 15, 2024, the IDF presented its investigation to the families. The inquiry concerned Nik, Ron Sherman and civilian Elia Toledano. It said these three hostages were held in the tunnel complex from which Hamas commander Ahmed Ghandour operated. Investigators assessed with high probability that the November 10, 2023 airstrike against Ghandour caused their deaths as a byproduct, while saying the exact circumstances could not be determined definitively. The investigation relied on the location where the bodies were found, analysis of the strike, intelligence and forensic findings.

Return

On December 14, 2023, IDF troops recovered Nik’s body from the tunnel in northern Gaza where Nik, Ron Sherman and Elia Toledano had been held. His family received confirmation after identification. Three days later, on December 17, he was buried at the military cemetery in Beersheba.

Family and remembrance

Nik was the son of Katya and Sergey and the older brother of Nikol. His family’s memories return to the texture of their home life: cooking with his mother, singing karaoke, making people laugh and helping with laundry and other chores. Katya spoke about the daily messages she and Nik exchanged and the way he hugged her. His sister’s memories, school friendships and his girlfriend Marta’s place in the family’s account keep him present as a young person with close relationships, distinct interests and routines.
