01
Life before October 7
Meirav Tal lived in Kibbutz Nir Oz with her partner, Yair “Yaya” Yaakov, and their blended family. The night before October 7, they celebrated Yair’s 59th birthday with his children, Yagil and Or. Meirav also had a son whose birthday fell on November 28. Before the attack, her life was anchored in home and family in the kibbutz; her account of the birthday and the next morning would later frame the abrupt break between an ordinary family gathering and captivity.
02
Taken from Nir Oz
On October 7, attackers shot through the safe-room door and wounded Yair, then used an explosive to force it open. Meirav told him she loved him before they were separated. She was dragged outside with a knife at her throat and put on a motorcycle; Yair was taken separately. His sons Yagil and Or were abducted from their mother Renana’s home elsewhere in the kibbutz. A vehicle later carried Meirav with Ada Sagi. The family was split in the attack, and Meirav did not know what had happened to Yair after seeing him wounded.
03
Days in captivity
Meirav was held in Gaza for 53 days. She later described the days as torture and the time as a sequence of minutes that seemed to stretch endlessly. She spent part of captivity with fellow hostage Ada Sagi. On the 50th day, Yagil was unexpectedly brought to them; he called out to her, and they embraced. Meirav gave him her sleeping place, and they spent the night together before he was released the next day. She did not know whether Yair was alive, and feared for him throughout her captivity.
04
Return home
Meirav was released alive on November 28, 2023, after 53 days in captivity. She returned on her son’s birthday, a date she had held onto while captive. The day before, Yagil and Or had been released; Meirav greeted them at the hospital in Tel Aviv. Her return reunited her with family, but she still did not know Yair’s fate.
05
Life after return
In her first-person account published on August 16, 2024, Meirav wrote that recovery was taking much longer than she had expected. On February 15, 2024, her family had been told that Yair was killed on October 7 and his body remained in Gaza. His remains were recovered on June 12, 2025, and he was buried in Nir Oz on June 20. When Meirav returned alive in November 2023, the family had still been waiting for news of him; confirmation of his death and the later recovery brought separate moments of loss and farewell.
