Before October 7
Liam Or-Nassar grew up in Kibbutz Re’im, where his parents, Ramzy Nassar and Dana Or, moved when he was one year old. He was the eldest of three children and followed Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball. At nine, he showed Ynet a drawing he had made during the 2014 Gaza war.

Liam was 18 and at home in Re’im when the attack began. His father called and told him to lock the door and go to the safe room. As Liam closed it, he heard gunfire and explosions; he said, “I’m a child, don’t shoot me.”
03
Captivity
Liam spent 54 days in captivity. In his first-person account, he described being taken into a tunnel, then held with Thai hostages and later with Omer Wenkert. He recalled constant fluorescent light and no sense of day or night. He said water was brought twice a day and they received half a pita in the evening. Liam and Omer talked, joked and shared memories; Liam also dreamed about his mother and spoke about Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball.

Return
Liam was released on November 29, 2023, after 54 days. His cousins Alma and Noam had returned on November 25. Liam’s first words to his father at their reunion were, “I’m okay, Dad, I’m okay.”

After the return
At the hospital after his release, Liam asked to have his full name, Or-Nassar, restored after his family had shortened it during captivity. In an April 7, 2024 interview, he described his grief for his close friend Amit Gabay, who was murdered on October 7. At his first Hapoel Tel Aviv game after returning, he saw Gabay’s memorial photograph and cried for two minutes before going to wash his face.
