The story
Yonatan Levit was born in Jerusalem on 5 May 2002, the son of Larisa and Pavel. His official memorial page records his date of birth, his parents' names and his service in the Technological and Maintenance Corps. He was 21 when he fell. His memory is preserved at the Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem, where his father Pavel visits his grave, lights candles and spends time close to his son's memory.
On 10 October 2023, a few days after the war began, Yonatan reported for reserve duty. He served in the Technological and Maintenance Corps and fell in the line of duty during the war on 20 March 2024, 10 Adar II 5784. At the time of his death he held the rank of staff sergeant, and he was posthumously promoted to sergeant first class. He was laid to rest in Section 18A at Mount Herzl and is survived by his family.
In a Ynetnews article from January 2026, Pavel spoke about the beginning of Yonatan's life: he was born prematurely in May, and his circumcision ceremony could take place only in September. Pavel was 39 when his son was born and described his very birth, and the days he lived, as a miracle. These were the memories he chose to share with the reporter, alongside the pain of loss and the place that meetings with other bereaved fathers have held in his life since his son's death.
Pavel is one of six fathers from Jerusalem who meet regularly on Fridays in the section where their sons are buried. Before sitting together, each father spends time at his son's grave; then they unfold chairs, drink coffee and talk. Pavel said he met the others in this place and misses them when several days pass without seeing them. The article described a friendship born of bereavement, with room for conversation, silence, tears and laughter. Within this weekly gathering, Pavel continues to carry Yonatan's memory. May his memory be a blessing.
