The story
Netanel Buchris was born in Lod on 11 Iyar 5764, 2 May 2004, the son of Orit and Gil and brother of Avihai. He began his schooling in the city, later attending the Arazim boarding school in Moshav Sde Yitzhak and Beit HaYeladim in the Jerusalem Hills. He completed his secondary education at Neta'im School in Lod. His life story describes a young man sensitive to those around him, who sought opportunities to offer warmth and help and kept his joy in life even in challenging moments.
While still at school, he was already active in helping others. He chaired the student council, tutored a younger pupil in arithmetic and helped children facing social difficulties. At the municipal youth center he also helped children with their homework. As part of the SAHI volunteer group, he distributed food to families in need and encouraged others to volunteer. His friends remembered the responsibility he brought to his tasks and his readiness to arrive early and stay until the work was finished.
During the coronavirus pandemic he continued his community work. In 2020 he was selected as one of Lod's outstanding young people in recognition of his contribution to society. After his death, Mayor Yair Revivo recalled this honor and his work for children and families. After high school, Netanel devoted a year of national volunteer service to SAHI in Jerusalem. On 20 September 2023 he enlisted in the IDF and served in the Home Front Command; during the war, too, he carried out his duties with dedication.
On 28 May 2024, 20 Iyar 5784, Netanel was killed in a road accident during a military journey near Moshav Patish, close to Ofakim. He was twenty and was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Lod. He was posthumously promoted from private to corporal. He is survived by his parents and a brother. His memory is honored at the Home Front Command memorial in Ramla and through SAHI initiatives distributing groceries on holidays and weekends. The city's ceremony honoring outstanding young volunteers was also dedicated to his memory and that of Naveh Elazar Laks. May his memory be a blessing.
