The story

Daniel Gersho, the son of Laura and Aryeh and a brother to Michal, Binyamin, Akiva, and Rachel, was born in Jerusalem. On 19 December 2021, he enlisted in the IDF and served in the infantry. In the Netzach Yehuda Battalion of the Kfir Brigade, he was a company sergeant major, with responsibility for the soldiers' welfare. In an article published after his death, his friends described the care he devoted to them and his wish to help, even beyond the needs of everyday military service.

One example was preserved in a post his friends shared again after his death. About six months earlier, Daniel had been looking for a place to host a social evening for 105 soldiers. Half of them had left Gaza only days before, and he was hoping to find a villa or estate with a swimming pool for them. In the post, he explained that he wanted to bring the soldiers joy and lift their spirits. For his friends, his search for a place for that gathering became a tangible memory of his concern for the people serving alongside him and of the effort he put into their well-being.

On 6 June 2024, 29 Iyar 5784, Daniel was pronounced dead at Shaare Zedek Medical Center after being injured in a motorcycle accident in Jerusalem. He was 21 when he died. Izkor describes his death as having occurred during his military service. He was buried at Mount Herzl Military Cemetery and is survived by his parents and four siblings. His friend from the military, Yoel Lifshitz, said that only recently they had spoken about their plans for life, and bade him farewell in sorrow over a future cut short.

His family approached the Hasdei Eran organization to promote the writing of a Torah scroll in his memory. In their joint appeal, the family described his love of Torah, the commandments, and people, and their wish to continue his path through an act of remembrance and kindness. The project was intended to bear his name and express the values he held dear. His memory is also preserved on the memorial wall of the Big Brother organization, which describes his service in the Netzach Yehuda Battalion and the circumstances of his death. May his memory be a blessing.
